Disclosure: This post contains my Fourthwall referral link. If you sign up through it, I may earn a referral reward from Fourthwall. It costs you nothing and never comes out of your profits.

This is what I use for my store, and I’ve been very please with it.

Selling books direct to readers sounds simple. Then you are the one juggling the storefront, the checkout, the sales tax, the ebook delivery, and the shipping labels for signed copies.

I moved my store from Shopify to Fourthwall. You can see it live at michellepillowbooks.com. This guide covers what Fourthwall is, what it costs, and exactly how authors and creatives can use it to sell signed print books, ebooks, audiobooks, merch, and memberships from one shop.

Quick answer: what is Fourthwall?

Fourthwall is a creator commerce platform that lets you build a fully branded online store and sell print-on-demand merch, products you ship yourself, digital downloads, and paid memberships from one checkout. The Free plan has no monthly fee. Fourthwall acts as the merchant of record, so it handles sales tax, and it charges no platform fee on physical products you ship yourself, like signed books. Ebooks and audiobooks can be delivered natively through Fourthwall or through its BookFunnel integration.

I personally use the BookFunnel integration because they handle customer service and many readers are familiar with thier system.

Key takeaways

  • No monthly fee on the Free plan. Fourthwall Pro is $19 a month or $180 a year.
  • Signed books and anything you ship yourself carry a 0% platform fee. Standard payment processing still applies.
  • Ebooks and audiobooks can be sold as Fourthwall digital products (5% fee on Free, 0% on Pro) or delivered through Fourthwall’s BookFunnel integration.
  • Sales tax is collected and remitted by Fourthwall as merchant of record.
  • Print-on-demand merch is manufactured, shipped, and supported by Fourthwall, so you never touch inventory. You just load your designs, publish the listing, and that’s it.

Why I moved my author store from Shopify to Fourthwall

The reasons authors and creators leave Shopify for Fourthwall usually come down to three things: it is simpler to run, you don’t have to handle sales tax yourself, and it costs less.

1. It is simpler to set up and run

Shopify is built to run almost any kind of online business, so many creator tools come from add-on apps you have to find, install, configure, and often pay for separately. Fourthwall’s own comparison notes that print-on-demand and bespoke products come through external apps on Shopify.

On Fourthwall, the creator tools come standard: a print-on-demand catalog of 350+ products, digital product hosting and delivery, paid memberships (yes, where members subscribe to you the creative), shipping integrations for orders you fulfill yourself, and customer support for any order that includes catalog products. For authors, ebook and audiobook delivery works natively, or you can connect BookFunnel. I use BookFunnel for their services, but both options work.

2. You don’t have to do your own sales tax

On Shopify, you are the merchant. Shopify helps calculate and charge tax at checkout, but according to Shopify’s help center, it doesn’t file or remit your taxes unless you pay for Shopify Tax’s automated filing, which charges a fee for every return. That paid service is also ending with sales made through December 31, 2026. After that, registering in the states where you owe tax, filing returns, and paying what you collected is on you, or on a filing service you pay to do it.

On Fourthwall, Fourthwall is the merchant of record, so the sales tax work is theirs. (More on exactly how that works below.)

3. It costs less

Shopify plans run $39 to $399 a month. Fourthwall’s Free plan has no monthly fee. Add the apps you no longer need and the sales tax help you no longer pay for, and the savings stack up.

The result: one storefront where a reader can find your signed paperbacks, ebooks, audiobooks, and merch together, without a stack of apps and monthly bills behind it.

Please sign up through my referral link if you found this helpful: link.fourthwall.com/join/michelle-m-pillow. Fourthwall only credits a referral when the link is used at sign-up, and it costs you nothing. Plus, you should receive $20 in sample credit when you sign up.

Can authors sell signed books on Fourthwall?

Yes. Signed books are listed as self-fulfilled products. You keep the inventory, ship the orders, and Fourthwall charges a 0% platform fee on them. You only pay standard payment processing. They collect the sales tax. You can also use it to track inventory for future orders or tax record keeping.

Plus, it doesn’t have to be books. It can be artwork, or speciality items that you want to ship directly from your inventory.

How to set up signed books on Fourthwall

  1. In your Fourthwall dashboard, go to Products > All Products and click Create New Product.
  2. Choose Sell something I have. This is the option Fourthwall built for signed items, handmade goods, and limited editions.
  3. Add photos, a description, and variants. Variants work well for choices like signed only versus personalized.
  4. Set your inventory so the listing stops selling when you run out. (Inventory tracking applies to self-fulfilled products only.)
  5. Set your shipping location and rates. You can set rates by package weight, so it will calculate the cost for you.
  6. When orders come in, pack, ship, and upload tracking in your dashboard. If you use ShipStation, Fourthwall can send orders straight there so you can buy and print labels, and tracking flows back to Fourthwall automatically. ShipStation has thier own fees. If you want to DYI and load tracking information (it’s easy) yourself, you can use other places like Pirateship.

Running behind on a signing? You can update the ship date on self-fulfilled products and Fourthwall notifies your readers for you.

What to know before you list signed books

  • You handle customer service for items you ship yourself. Fourthwall’s support team covers catalog products only.
  • Don’t want to pack boxes? Fourthwall also offers a warehousing service (3PL) where you send your inventory to its fulfillment partners, and they store, pack, and ship it for you.
  • Bundle the ebook with the signed copy. Fourthwall lets you attach digital files to physical products, so a reader who orders a signed paperback can start reading the ebook or audiobook right away while the print copy is in the mail.

How do you sell ebooks and audiobooks on Fourthwall?

You have two great options: sell them as Fourthwall digital products, or connect BookFunnel and let it handle delivery.

Option 1: Fourthwall digital products

Upload your file and Fourthwall hosts it and handles secure delivery to the buyer. Fourthwall says you can list any file type as a digital product, including PDFs, MP3s, and ZIP files.

  • Fee: 5% on the Free plan, 0% on Pro
  • Storage: 5 GB on Free, up to 100 GB on Pro
  • File size: Paid digital products support up to 2 GB per listing, depending on your plan

This works well for bonus content, short stories, art packs, printables, and simple download bundles.

Before You Sell Ebooks on Fourthwall: Know the Content Rules

Fourthwall’s payment processors won’t process payments for adult content. That means you can’t sell anything that depicts nudity or explicit sexual acts. Fourthwall’s policy doesn’t make an exception for written fiction, so ebooks and audiobooks with explicit sex scenes fall into a gray area. For that reason, many author prefer to use BookFunnel for delievery and storage.

If you write steamy romance and are worried: Email support@fourthwall.com before you list explicit titles. Ask whether your books are allowed and keep their written answer on file. Check your cover images too, since nudity counts.

What’s allowed:

  • Fictional violence, including horror, dark romance, and fight scenes
  • Stories that deal with difficult subjects like self-harm, as long as they don’t promote it

How delivery works: Ebooks and audiobooks have to be delivered through Fourthwall’s own downloads or an integrated app like BookFunnel.

Fourthwall can update these rules at any time. Read the full Acceptable Use Policy before you list.

At the time of writing this, my romance novels have not had any issues and I’ve had the store for awhile now. I also know several romance authors who do have stores there as well.

Option 2: The BookFunnel integration

Fourthwall connects to BookFunnel through a webhook. When a reader buys an ebook or audiobook from your shop, Fourthwall sends the order to BookFunnel, and BookFunnel emails the reader a unique download link. Read the BookFunnel walk through here. It’s easy once you figure it out the first time.

The big advantage is reader support. BookFunnel is built to get books onto whatever device a reader uses, and it handles the “how do I get this on my e-reader?” questions so you don’t have to.

To connect it, go to Apps > BookFunnel in your Fourthwall dashboard and click How to Connect. Note that BookFunnel’s Direct Sales feature requires its Mid List plan or above.

Which should you choose? If your readers mostly want a quick download, native digital products are the simplest path. If you sell a lot of ebooks and audiobooks and want hands-off device delivery and reader support, BookFunnel is worth it. I also found a lot of readers already use BookFunnel and the books will be in their library there as well.

What does Fourthwall cost?

Fourthwall has no monthly fee, no upfront costs, and no contracts on the Free plan. Here is how the two Fourthwall plans compare.

Free Pro
Monthly cost $0 $19/month or $180/year
Products you ship yourself (signed books) 0% fee 0% fee
Print-on-demand catalog products Listed base cost per item, you keep your margin Same
Digital products (ebooks, audio, PDFs) 5% fee, 5 GB storage 0% fee, up to 100 GB storage
Memberships 5% fee 5% fee
Donations and tips No platform fee No platform fee
Sample credit Not included $10/month ($120/year)
Team members Up to 2 Unlimited
US credit card processing 2.9% + $0.30 2.9% + $0.30

A few details that matter:

  • The digital fee is based on list price. Fourthwall’s own example: a $10 ebook sold with a 20% off promo code. The reader pays $8. The Free plan platform fee is $0.50 (5% of the $10 list price), plus a $0.53 card processing fee.
  • When Pro pays for itself: If you sell more than about $380 a month in digital products, Pro’s $19 monthly fee costs less than the 5% fee. On the annual plan, the line is about $3,600 a year. The sample credit is a bonus on top.
  • Older accounts: Fourthwall says accounts created on or before August 25, 2025 keep a 3% digital product fee on the Free plan.

Please sign up through my referral link if you found this helpful: link.fourthwall.com/join/michelle-m-pillow. Fourthwall only credits a referral when the link is used at sign-up, and it costs you nothing. Plus, you should receive $20 in sample credit when you sign up.

How does Fourthwall handle sales tax as merchant of record?

A merchant of record is the business legally responsible for the sale to the customer. It processes the payment and carries the sales tax obligation. On most store builders, that is you. On Fourthwall, it is Fourthwall, for all products and memberships sold through your shop.

Here is how that works for sellers:

  • At checkout: Fourthwall calculates sales tax in real time based on the buyer’s shipping address and collects it.
  • Behind the scenes: Fourthwall maintains state-by-state nexus registrations and sends the tax directly to state tax authorities. For international buyers, it handles VAT collection and remittance too.
  • In your payout: The tax collected is withheld and sent to the state, so it never passes through your payout.
  • Your filings: You don’t file monthly state-by-state sales tax returns for orders placed through your Fourthwall shop.
  • Your income tax: Still yours. You report your Fourthwall payouts as income. US-based creators receive a 1099-MISC from Fourthwall when payouts exceed the IRS threshold.

One catch for authors: Fourthwall’s coverage applies to sales through your Fourthwall shop. Books you sell in person at signings and events, or through other platforms, are still your responsibility for sales tax.

This is general information, not tax advice. Talk to your accountant about your own situation.

What else can authors and creatives sell on Fourthwall?

  • Print-on-demand merch. Choose from hundreds of catalog products, including apparel, mugs, jewelry, blankets, and backpacks. Each item has a publicly listed base cost that is deducted from your selling price, and you keep the rest. Fourthwall’s example: a shirt with a $10 base cost sold at $22 earns you $12. Fourthwall handles manufacturing, shipping, and customer support, with an average reply time of 12 hours or less, including nights and weekends.
  • Memberships. Offer members-only video, images, polls, Discord channel access, and private RSS feeds, with an optional custom iOS and Android app. For authors, that could mean early chapters, bonus scenes, or behind-the-scenes content. The fee is 5%.
  • Gift cards for your shop.
  • Bundles that combine digital downloads with physical products.
  • Donations and tips with no platform fee beyond payment processing.
  • Promo codes, giveaways, and personal thank-you notes to readers.

Fourthwall also connects to YouTube’s product shelf, Instagram and Facebook Shopping, TikTok Shop, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Zapier, and more.

Does Fourthwall use AI on my art or books?

Fourthwall uses AI in a few optional tools, including Eli, its shop assistant. According to Fourthwall, your art, designs, shop data, and customer information are not used to train AI models, and you can turn AI off across your shop in your account settings. For authors and artists who care about how their work is handled, that is worth knowing.

Is Fourthwall a good fit for every author?

Fourthwall is a strong fit if you want:

  • One branded storefront for signed books, digital books, merch, and memberships
  • No monthly fee while you test selling direct
  • Sales tax handled for you
  • Merch without holding inventory

Think it through if:

  • You sell a high volume of digital products on the Free plan. Run the Pro math above.
  • You ship a lot yourself. You handle customer service for self-fulfilled orders, or you can use Fourthwall’s warehousing service.
  • You use Bookvault for print-on-demand paperbacks. Bookvault says it does not currently offer a direct Fourthwall integration. Fourthwall’s help center describes listing Bookvault paperbacks as self-fulfilled products, so check both before you plan around it.
