If you have an ebook file (.epub, .mobi, .pdf, .docx, .azw, or similar) and want to read it on your Kindle device or Kindle reading app, Amazon’s Send to Kindle service is the official way to do it. This walkthrough covers the current 2026 process.

Why use Send to Kindle?

Send to Kindle delivers personal documents and supported ebook files to your Kindle library so they sync across every device on your account. It is free and is built into the Amazon Kindle ecosystem.

It is especially useful for:

  • ARC reviewers who receive an ebook from an author or publisher
  • Beta readers handed a manuscript file
  • Readers who buy directly from an author’s website and want to read on their Kindle
  • Anyone with a long PDF, Word doc, or epub they want on the larger e-ink screen

Find your Send to Kindle email address

  1. Sign in at amazon.com/hz/mycd/myx (Manage Your Content and Devices).
  2. Click the Preferences tab.
  3. Scroll to Personal Document Settings and expand it.
  4. Your devices and Kindle apps each have an address that ends in @kindle.com. Pick the one you want files delivered to.
  5. While you are there, scroll to Approved Personal Document E-mail List and add the email address you will be sending from. Amazon only accepts files from approved addresses.

Three ways to send a file to your Kindle

1. Send to Kindle web upload (easiest)

Go to amazon.com/sendtokindle, sign in, and drag your file (or multiple files) into the browser window. Pick which Kindle device or app to deliver it to and click Send. The file usually appears on your Kindle within a couple of minutes.

2. Send to Kindle desktop app

Amazon offers free Send to Kindle apps for Mac and Windows. Once installed, right-click any supported file on your computer and choose “Send to Kindle” from the context menu. Both apps support drag-and-drop as well.

3. Email it to your Kindle

From an approved email address, attach the file to a blank email and send it to your @kindle.com address. Leave the subject line blank or type “Convert” in the subject if you want Amazon to convert the file to Kindle format. This is the original method and still works.

Supported file types

As of 2026, Send to Kindle supports: EPUB, PDF, DOC/DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM/HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, BMP, MOBI (legacy support), and several others. Amazon updated EPUB support in 2022 and now treats EPUB as a first-class format.

About emails and approved addresses

Anyone who knows your @kindle.com address could try to send you spam, so Amazon will not deliver any document from an address that is not on your Approved Personal Document E-mail List. Add your own email, your author’s, and your publisher’s there before they try to send you anything.

For authors and publishers sending ARCs

If you are an author sending an ARC, give your reviewers the exact email address you will send from so they can add it to their approved list before delivery.
